Certain Medications

If you take certain medications for a long time they may lead to bone loss and raise the fracture risk. These medications include

  • glucocorticoids
  • certain antiseizure drugs such as barbiturates
  • gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues used to treat endometriosis
  • high doses of thyroid hormone
  • excessive use of aluminium-containing antacids

But if you are taking one of these drugs, do not stop the medication or change the dose on your own. Ask your doctor.
