The prevention and the treatment of osteoporosis have got two objectives: to preserve the natural bone structure and to prevent fractures – so that you can continue your active life for many years.
Every prevention and therapy of osteoporosis starts with calcium and vitamin D. If this is not enough to stop the bone loss, your doctor may prescribe you a SERM. This is a substance that is not a hormone, but it acts on the bone like the hormone oestrogen does. It helps you to keep your bone structure healthy, preserves the quality of your bone architecture and prevents fractures of the spine. On top of it, the SERM has a positive effect on the lipid levels in the blood, decreases your risk of invasive breast cancer and reduces the fibrinogen level in your blood, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
If you are getting older, and the physiological structure of the bone changes to the worse, and if your bone loss doesn’t stop, you may be recommended another medication, bisphosphonates or teriparatide. Both substances decrease the risk for fractures of the spine and of other bones, and your bone density will grow again: slowly if you take bisphosphonates, more rapidly if you inject teriparatide.
